Run your first club race replay

Dinghy Coach lets you replay an entire fleet's GPS tracks together, compare boats, and share the debrief with everyone who raced — all without accounts or specialist software. Here's how to run your first post-race debrief.

What you need

  • GPS tracks from your sailors (FIT, GPX, TCX, Vakaros, or tracks recorded by the Android app)
  • A tablet or laptop to run the debrief in a browser
  • Optionally: a projector or screen to show the debrief to the fleet

Step 1 — Collect tracks from sailors

There are a few ways to get tracks:

If sailors use the Android app: tracks upload automatically when they connect to Wi-Fi or mobile data after racing. Tell sailors to connect to the club Wi-Fi before they leave the dinghy park.

If sailors use Garmin watches or other GPS devices: ask them to export their GPX or FIT file and send it to you (email, WhatsApp, etc.), or have them upload directly at app.dinghy.coach/import on the club computer.

See Message template for sailors for a ready-made message you can send to your fleet.

Step 2 — Upload any tracks that aren't already in the library

For each track you've received:

  1. Go to app.dinghy.coach/import.
  2. Choose the file and wait for the upload to complete.
  3. The debrief opens automatically — you can close it and do the next track.

Step 3 — Open the track library and load the fleet

  1. Go to app.dinghy.coach/openTracks tab.
  2. Filter by today's date and your venue.
  3. Tick all the tracks for the race you want to debrief.
  4. Tap Open selected.

All selected boats load into the debrief view simultaneously.

Step 4 — Set up the course

In the debrief, open the Course tab in the sidebar:

  1. Set wind direction — tap the compass icon and enter the wind direction (the direction the wind is coming from, in degrees). This enables all the VMG and leg analysis.
  2. Place marks — tap the windward mark position on the chart to place a buoy, then the leeward mark. For a gate, place both gate marks.
  3. Set the start line — tap the committee boat end and pin end to define the line.

Getting the course set up takes about two minutes and makes the Stats tab much more useful.

Step 5 — Save and share

  1. Tap Save in the top bar to create a shareable session.
  2. Tap Share and copy the link.
  3. Send the link to your sailors — they can open it on any device with a browser, no app or account needed.

Running the debrief on a screen

If you're debriefing in the clubhouse on a projector:

  • Open the session on the presenting device and go full-screen (F11 on most browsers).
  • Use Play to run through the race, pausing at interesting moments.
  • The Stats tab works well for a quick tack-loss comparison across the fleet.
  • Zoom into the start line, a mark rounding, or a crossing to show specific moments.

New to the stats and what they mean? See Understanding the replay in the Sailors section.
