What to do after racing

What to do after racing

A step-by-step guide for whoever is running the post-race debrief — typically the race officer, club coach, or fleet captain.

As soon as racing finishes

On the water (if using coaching mode): If you were running a coach session with the Android app, end the session from the Coaching screen. This automatically saves the session and queues it for upload.

In the dinghy park: Tell sailors to connect to club Wi-Fi before they leave. Android app tracks upload in the background — they don't need to do anything except connect to the network. This takes 1–3 minutes per track depending on file size.

For sailors using Garmin watches or other devices, direct them to a computer or ask them to upload from their phone at app.dinghy.coach/import.

Checking that tracks are in

Give it 5–10 minutes after sailors have connected to Wi-Fi, then:

  1. Go to app.dinghy.coach/openTracks tab.
  2. Filter by today's date.
  3. Count the tracks — you should see one per sailor who was recording.

If tracks are missing, see Missing or unmatched tracks.

Setting up the debrief session

  1. Tick all the tracks for the race you want to debrief.
  2. Tap Open selected.
  3. In the Course tab, set the wind direction and place marks (windward, leeward, gate if applicable).
  4. In the Boats tab, check that all boat names are correct. If any are showing device codes or generic names, an admin can rename them from the admin tracks page.

Saving and sharing

  1. Tap Save in the top bar. The session is stored to the cloud.
  2. Tap Share and copy the link.
  3. Send the link to your fleet via WhatsApp, your club's messaging app, or email.

The link is permanent — sailors can return to it later to re-watch the race. Sessions don't expire.

During the debrief (clubhouse or online)

If you're presenting to the fleet:

  • Go full-screen (F11) on a projector-connected laptop for the best view.
  • Start with a full race playback at 4× or 8× speed to show the overall fleet picture.
  • Slow down to 1× or 2× for the start — this is usually the most interesting part.
  • Open the Stats tab and show the manoeuvre comparison — tack and gybe loss is the data sailors most want to see.
  • Use Segments to compare boats on a specific beat or run.

After the debrief

The saved session link stays accessible. You can:

  • Send it in the club newsletter
  • Link to it from your club website
  • Return to it at the next training session for reference

If you want to tidy the track library, use the admin tracks page to rename or remove tracks that are no longer needed.
