Debrief after a session

Debrief after a session

After a coached session, everything recorded on the water — GPS tracks from all sailors, course setup, voice notes — feeds into a combined debrief session in the web app. Here's how to get from the water to a shareable replay.

Step 1 — Upload everything

Coach's session data uploads automatically from the Android app when the coach's phone connects to internet after the session ends. This includes the course setup (wind, marks) and any voice note transcripts.

Sailors' GPS tracks upload from each sailor's phone when they connect to Wi-Fi or mobile data. Ask sailors to connect to club Wi-Fi before leaving the dinghy park — uploads are automatic once connected.

Give it a few minutes, then check app.dinghy.coach/openSessions tab. Your session should appear with all connected boats listed.

Step 2 — Open the session

Click the session in the Sessions tab. The debrief view loads with:

  • All sailors' GPS tracks already loaded
  • Wind direction set from what you captured on the water
  • Buoy positions placed at the marks you recorded
  • Voice notes in the Notes tab

If some tracks are missing, see Missing or unmatched tracks.

Step 3 — Check and adjust the course

Open the Course tab and verify the mark positions and wind direction look correct on the chart. You can adjust any setting here — drag marks to correct positions, or update the wind direction if conditions shifted during the session.

Step 4 — Review the stats

Open the Stats tab for the analysis that's most useful for your session:

Manoeuvres: For a technique session, compare tack loss across sailors. The table shows average, best, and worst tack/gybe loss per boat — this shows clearly who is losing time in stays and who isn't.

Boat comparison: Side-by-side speed and VMG comparison across all boats for the full session.

Course analytics: If marks are set, this shows how each boat performed on each leg separately — useful for diagnosing whether a boat is slower upwind, downwind, or just at the marks.

Step 5 — Use segments for targeted analysis

If you coached a specific exercise — a series of upwind legs, a starting drill, a gate rounding practice — use Segments to isolate that part of the session. Segments let you compare boats over exactly the window you care about.

Step 6 — Review voice notes

Open the Notes tab. Voice notes captured during the session appear as transcripts with timestamps. You can:

  • Edit a note's text if the transcription needs correction
  • Toggle a note Public so sailors see it when they view the shared session
  • Leave notes private (the default) for your own coaching record

Step 7 — Save and share

  1. Tap Save in the top bar (the session may already be saved from the upload).
  2. Tap Share and copy the link.
  3. Send the link to your sailors.

Sailors open the link in any browser and see the replay, their own stats, and any notes you've made public. They don't need the app or an account.
