Set wind and marks

Set wind and marks

Recording the course setup on the water — wind direction, buoy positions, and start/finish line — feeds directly into the post-session debrief. Tack/gybe loss, VMG, and leg-by-leg analysis all depend on having this information.

Setting wind direction

On the water (Android app):

  1. On the Coaching screen, tap Wind.
  2. The Wind screen shows a live compass rose with your current heading.
  3. Point the phone directly into the wind (the top of the phone should face the wind).
  4. Wait for the compass reading to stabilise, then tap Set wind direction.
  5. The wind direction is saved and will be included in the coach session upload.

A calibration prompt appears if the compass accuracy is poor — follow the on-screen figure-8 pattern to calibrate the magnetometer before setting wind.

In the debrief (web app):

You can also set or adjust wind direction in the debrief view:

  1. Open the Course tab in the sidebar.
  2. Tap the compass icon.
  3. Enter the wind direction in degrees (the direction the wind is coming from). For example, a southerly wind is 180°.

Placing marks

On the water (Android app):

  1. On the Coaching screen, tap Marks.
  2. Sail close to the mark or ask a sailor to sail past it. When you're at the mark, tap Windward mark, Leeward mark, or Gate mark as appropriate.
  3. The app waits for a validated GPS fix (green indicator, accuracy within 30 metres) before saving. If the GPS isn't ready, the button is amber and shows the current accuracy.
  4. A Return button at the bottom of the Marks screen takes you back to the Coaching screen.

Marks are saved with GPS latitude and longitude. They're included in the coach session upload and appear in the debrief automatically.

In the debrief (web app):

You can also place marks manually:

  1. Open the Course tab in the sidebar.
  2. In the Marks section, click the mark type you want to place.
  3. Click on the chart at the mark position.

Marks placed in the debrief are saved as part of the session when you tap Save.

Setting the start and finish line

In the debrief's Course tab:

  1. Click Start line.
  2. Click the committee boat end on the chart, then the pin end. The line is drawn between them.
  3. For a separate finish line, repeat with Finish line.

How course data is used in the debrief

Once wind and marks are set, the Stats tab shows enhanced analysis:

  • VMG (velocity made good) — how fast each boat is moving towards/away from the wind, not just total speed
  • VMC (velocity made good on course) — speed made good towards the next mark on each leg
  • Leg summaries — time, average VMC, and tack distribution for each leg separately
  • Rounding analysis — time and VMG lost approaching and leaving each mark

The Course tab also shows the implied racing route — which marks the boats appear to be racing around, inferred from the track data.
